Europan 10 Implementation: the special strength of the Europan 10 Forchheim winning-entry approach was to work with a modern architectural language in a regional context. This outside view, together with a precise analysis of the environment, resulted in a rather unusual project, which aroused the interest of the municipality (visit the project “Waasner Area conversion in Forchheim”). The implementation process continued, with a new program and a new location, the pursuit of this new identity using the same architectural devices as in the Europan competition, with constant reference to the local context and the mediaeval townscape with steep roofs and half-timbering. The implementation was an opportunity to further improve the main ideas of the E10 competition.
At the heart of the city: a new layered mixed-use building, is injected in Paradeplatz, the main and historical square of Forchheim, bringing new life at the heart of the city. It is an overlay of commercial use, office space and housing. The lower levels provide help to activate the Paradeplatz scene, while upper floors provide attractive central housing as an alternative to suburban villas. Contemporary technology, transparency and identity build up a rich urban life through the addition of new uses supported by the connectivity and permeability of public space. The project was included in an initiative of the Regional Government to reinforce the cores of the Bavarian cities.
